The Analog Film Club at UWM is a student-led organization dedicated to the hands-on use, exploration, and preservation of 16mm film as a living, artist-driven medium. Focused on non-commercial, experimental, and process-based practices, the club supports students in engaging directly with the material through workshops, production opportunities, and curated screenings. Our mission is to keep 16mm film accessible and relevant within the university community—especially as it re-emerges as a meaningful alternative in a hyper-digital media ecosystem—by fostering creative access to this valuable and historically rich medium for students from all backgrounds.
The club builds on the legacy of the Film, Video, Animation, and New Genres (FVANG) department at UWM, which has long been recognized for its commitment to experimental cinema, personal media, and material-based practices. As a department that continues to embrace 16mm film as both a pedagogical tool and an expressive medium, FVANG has fostered generations of filmmakers whose work resists the constraints of traditional commercial film. FVANG is one of the only film departments in the world that still has a fully functional film-processing lab in-house. The 16mm Film Club seeks to honor and extend this tradition by maintaining access to analog film tools and continuing to support film as a space for radical, artistic exploration.
